To the editor: I just lately determined to rescind my volunteer standing for the World Cup (“German soccer leader adds to calls for boycott of World Cup matches in United States,” Jan. 27). I initially volunteered believing the occasion may signify unity, sportsmanship and respect throughout cultures.

That modified when FIFA selected to award a “peace prize” to President Trump — a call I discover deeply at odds with the values such an award is supposed to honor, notably given this administration’s undemocratic insurance policies and actions carried out in Los Angeles.

A peace prize ought to mirror a real dedication to peace, equity and duty. Persevering with to volunteer would have felt like endorsing a message I don’t agree with.

This was not a simple resolution. I nonetheless imagine within the energy of sport to convey folks collectively, however these values solely matter when they’re backed by integrity and accountability.

To the editor: It’s to be hoped {that a} World Cup and presumably Olympic boycott, together with the European Union/India and Canada/China commerce pacts, will make Trump notice he’s not king of the world. Nations are starting to understand they’ll get alongside with out him and with out the U.S.

If People don’t get collectively and rein in Trump, the U.S. will change into a pitiful, lonely large.
