    Snow, ice hit western, central US as massive storm sweeps nation

    HOUSTON: A large winter storm dumped snow and freezing rain on New Mexico and Texas Saturday (Jan 24) because it unfold throughout the US in the direction of the northeast, threatening tens of tens of millions of People with blackouts, transportation chaos and bone-chilling chilly.

    Customers stripped grocery store cabinets because the Nationwide Climate Service forecast big snowfall in some areas and probably “catastrophic” ice accumulations from freezing rain.

    Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that as much as 240 million People might be affected by the storm. At the least 16 states and the US capital, Washington, declared states of emergency.

    “Take this storm severely, of us,” the Nationwide Climate Service stated on X, predicting an “astonishingly lengthy swath” of snowfall from New Mexico to Maine.

    Greater than 3,400 flights out and in of the US have been cancelled on Saturday alone, and greater than 1,100 others have been delayed, in accordance with tracker FlightAware.

    In Dallas, freezing rain pelted town, and temperatures plummeted to – 6 Celsius.

    Houston Mayor John Whitmire urged residents of the nation’s fourth most populous metropolis to hunker down by late Saturday: “Be the place it’s good to be for the subsequent 72 hours.”
