    Italy updates Arctic stance as Greenland tensions escalate

    ROME: Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni urged NATO on Friday (Jan 16) to develop “a coordinated presence” within the Arctic area to stop tensions and reply to “interference by different actors”, amid escalating tensions amongst Western allies over Greenland.

    In a letter learn throughout the presentation of an Italian authorities paper on the Arctic, Meloni stated the area was turning into more and more essential as a result of improvement of latest sea routes and its big “vitality and mineral sources”.

    Italy has had observer standing on the Arctic Council that oversees the area since 2013 and up to date its coverage amid latest US-Danish tensions over Greenland, which sharpened deal with the world.

    US President Donald Trump has renewed calls for American control of Greenland to stop Russia or China from occupying it. The island, an autonomous territory of Denmark, rejected the concept in talks held in Washington this week, exposing “basic” variations.

    FOCUS ON RUSSIA AND CHINA

    “We’re an observer nation within the Arctic Council and have at all times upheld respect for worldwide legislation, starting with the UN Conference on the Regulation of the Sea,” Meloni stated.

    The Italian coverage doc pointed to Russia’s renewed deal with the Arctic, which included a build-up of its navy presence there.

    “This extra assertive posture … mixed with the clear demonstration of the violation of the precept of the inviolability of borders proven in Ukraine, first led NATO and subsequently the European Union to react,” the doc stated.
