MILAN: Italian palaeontologists have uncovered 1000’s of dinosaur footprints on a near-vertical rock face greater than 2,000 metres above sea stage within the Stelvio Nationwide Park, a discovery they are saying is among the many world’s richest websites for the Triassic interval.

The tracks, some as much as 40 cm extensive and exhibiting claw marks, stretch for about 5 kilometres within the high-altitude glacial Valle di Fraele close to Bormio, one of many venues for the 2026 Winter Olympics within the northern area of Lombardy.

“This is likely one of the largest and oldest footprint websites in Italy, and among the many most spectacular I’ve seen in 35 years,” mentioned Cristiano Dal Sasso, paleontologist at Milan’s Pure Historical past Museum in a press convention on Tuesday (Dec 16) on the headquarters of the Lombardy Area.

Consultants consider the prints had been left by herds of long-necked herbivores, doubtless Plateosaurus, greater than 200 million years in the past when the world was a heat lagoon, excellent for dinosaurs to roam alongside seashores, leaving tracks within the mud close to the water.
