To the editor: It was wrenching to learn concerning the experiences of the 2 Black expectant moms featured on this article being handled so callously by medical personnel, whose major responsibility is to assist sufferers in misery (“Delayed care to two pregnant Black women highlights maternal health disparities,” Dec. 5). These incidents mirror the systemic racism that adheres to the underbelly of many American establishments, together with some hospitals.
In making an attempt to point out that it “obtained it” and would do higher, one of many hospitals said that it had “mandated cultural competency coaching for all labor and supply workers.” However since when do medical personnel want “cultural competency coaching” to deal with each affected person with dignity and compassion? What a part of Black tradition must be understood to offer Black moms with the identical degree of care and a spotlight given to everybody else?
As an alternative, what is required is coaching in eliminating or at the least suppressing racial biases when coping with nonwhite sufferers and classes in frequent courtesy. The offending personnel concerned listed here are lucky that they may seemingly be let off the hook with attendance at coaching periods and don’t must face actual accountability for the lifelong trauma they’ve induced the 2 ladies in query.
