Garner police mentioned that “medical personnel on the scene described Officer Smith as a hero whose actions doubtless prevented additional lack of life.”

“Officer Smith devoted his profession to defending others, and even in his last moments, he put the security of others earlier than his personal,” Garner police chief Chris Adams mentioned in an announcement. “Our condolences exit to the Smith household, the WakeMed Campus Police Division, and the complete WakeMed employees.”

North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein spoke out on the capturing, saying on social media that Smith was “defending sufferers and their households” when he was killed.

“Regulation enforcement officers put themselves in hurt’s option to maintain us protected, and we’re eternally grateful for Officer Smith’s sacrifice,” the governor wrote. “Please pray for his household and the complete WakeMed neighborhood of their time of want.”
