“RE-ESTABLISH DETERRENCE IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA”

In a succession of X posts carrying photographs of his Kuala Lumpur conferences on Friday, Hegseth mentioned he mentioned a longstanding alliance with Thailand’s defence minister, described Indonesia as “an anchor of regional stability”, and mentioned he mentioned advancing Washington’s robust defence partnership with the Philippines.

“We’ll work relentlessly to re-establish deterrence within the South China Sea and advance our alliance,” he mentioned of the assembly with the Philippine defence secretary Gilberto Teodoro.

Beijing claims sovereignty over virtually all the South China Sea through a line on its maps that overlaps with elements of the unique financial zones of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam.

China has deployed a coast guard armada to implement these claims, has clashed repeatedly with Philippine vessels and has been accused of disrupting the power actions of Malaysia and Vietnam.

Beijing says its coast guard has operated professionally in defending Chinese language territory from incursions.

Chinese language Defence Minister Dong instructed ASEAN counterparts that Beijing would work with its neighbours to “make the protect of widespread safety much more strong”.

“With Japanese knowledge, we will pool Japanese power, and thru sensible actions, safeguard lasting peace and stability within the South China Sea,” he mentioned, in response to China’s defence ministry.
