“It was a Russian IL-20M reconnaissance plane. After visible identification, we handed over escort duties for the plane to our Swedish NATO companions and returned to Rostock-Laage,” it added.

The operation was performed as NATO prepares to convene its North Atlantic Council on Tuesday to debate a separate incident involving Russian jets over Estonia.

In response to the Reuters information company, that assembly is to deal with what Tallinn referred to as an “unprecedented and brazen” violation of its airspace on Friday when three Russian MiG-31 fighters entered with out permission and remained for 12 minutes earlier than leaving.

The declare sparked condemnation from NATO and European governments, who referred to as the incursion a “reckless” and “harmful provocation”.

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal requested pressing “NATO Article 4 consultations” on the “completely unacceptable” incursion. Article 4 permits NATO members to carry consultations with the alliance when any state believes its territorial integrity, political independence or safety is beneath risk.

Russia’s Ministry of Defence denied the allegation whereas Estonia summoned Moscow’s cost d’affaires in protest.

Tensions have been heightened in current weeks by a collection of airspace violations alongside NATO’s japanese flank.

Romania stated final week that its radar detected a Russian drone, prompting it to scramble fighter jets. Earlier this month, Poland reported that it had shot down a number of drones throughout a Russian aerial assault on Ukraine, marking the primary time NATO forces have immediately engaged in that battle.

Ukraine has stated the incidents present Moscow is testing the West’s resolve because the battle is in its fourth yr. Navy analysts notice that such incursions function intelligence-gathering operations, checks of NATO’s responses and strain techniques designed to unsettle NATO members bordering Russia.
