RAMALLAH: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas referred to as on the militant group Hamas on Wednesday (Apr 23) to cede accountability for the Gaza Strip, hand over its arms to the Palestinian Authority and switch itself right into a political occasion.

Hamas has refused calls in current months by Israel and america to put down its arms.

Abbas made his remarks in a speech throughout a gathering within the West Financial institution metropolis of Ramallah at which he’s anticipated to call a successor, a part of efforts to reply worldwide doubts over the Palestinian Authority’s viability at a essential second for the area.

“Hamas should hand over (its) Gaza tasks and hand over its arms to the accountability to Palestinian Authority and rework right into a political occasion,” Abbas mentioned.

Abbas has criticised the Hamas-led assault on Israel on Oct 7, 2023, which he mentioned gave Israel a pretext to destroy Gaza. Israel launched its army marketing campaign in opposition to Hamas in Gaza after the Hamas-led assault.

Hamas, which opposes Abbas’ efforts at peacemaking with Israel, has accused him of cracking down in opposition to militant factions within the Israeli-occupied West Financial institution. It didn’t instantly touch upon Abbas’s new remarks.

Abbas urged world leaders to compel Israel to finish the battle in Gaza, pull out its forces and finish the actions of Jewish settlements, including that there will be no peace till the Palestinians set up a state within the borders that have been in place earlier than the 1967 Center East battle.
