    China urges US to protect rights of Chinese students amid growing security scrutiny

    TAIPEI: Beijing on Thursday (Mar 20) demanded protections for Chinese language college students within the US after a congressional panel requested six American universities at hand over a considerable amount of detailed data on their Chinese language college students, citing nationwide safety considerations.

    A letter despatched to the schools, together with Stanford and Carnegie Mellon, alleged that the Chinese language authorities was embedding researchers in high American establishments to realize direct entry to delicate applied sciences.

    In response, Chinese language Overseas Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated Chinese language college students account for about one-quarter of all worldwide college students within the US and that their actions have promoted “the financial prosperity and technological growth of the US”.

    “That is within the curiosity of each events,” Mao instructed reporters at a every day briefing. “We urge the US to cease overstretching the idea of nationwide safety, successfully shield the reputable rights and pursuits of Chinese language college students, and never impose discriminatory restrictive measures on Chinese language college students.”

    Her remarks got here a day after John Moolenaar, chair of the Home Choose Committee on the Chinese language Communist Occasion, despatched a letter to 6 universities requesting data on Chinese language college students enrolled in superior science and expertise programmes. He accused the establishments of placing American analysis in danger in change for monetary incentives.

    The universities named in Moolenaar’s letter had been Carnegie Mellon College, Purdue College, Stanford College, the College of Illinois, the College of Maryland, and the College of Southern California.

    “The Chinese language Communist Occasion has established a well-documented, systematic pipeline to embed researchers in main US establishments, offering them direct publicity to delicate applied sciences with dual-use navy functions,” Moolenaar wrote in a letter to Farnam Jahanian, president of Carnegie Mellon College.

    “America’s scholar visa system has turn out to be a Malicious program for Beijing, offering unrestricted entry to our high analysis establishments and posing a direct risk to our nationwide safety,” it added.

    “If left unaddressed, this development will proceed to displace American expertise, compromise analysis integrity, and gasoline China’s technological ambitions at our expense.”

    The letter requested data together with the Chinese language college students’ sources of funding, the kinds of analysis they’re concerned in, what colleges they beforehand attended, and “a country-by-country breakdown of candidates, admittances, and enrolments at your college”.
