To the editor: A few years in the past, I wrote to The Instances commending David L. Ulin on his piece retracing Holden Caulfield’s path through Manhattan in “The Catcher within the Rye.” And now I’m writing to commend him on one other strolling piece, this time on the comforting routine of a daily stroll through his L.A. neighborhood.

He superbly celebrates the individuality of the numerous communities that make this a “area filled with character” slightly than of faceless sprawl.

I used to be sorry when Ulin left The Instances. But, just like the reassurance he finds in seeing the identical folks on his stroll every day, I discover it comforting to nonetheless see his byline in Opinion once in a while, his writing as eloquent as ever.
