WASHINGTON: Two US Congress members are calling on President Donald Trump’s administration to contemplate limiting the export of synthetic intelligence chips made by Nvidia, alleging Chinese AI firm DeepSeek has relied on them.

Republican John Moolenaar and Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi, who lead the Home Choose Committee on China, requested for the transfer as a part of a Commerce and State Division-led assessment ordered by Trump to scrutinise the US export management system in mild of “developments involving strategic adversaries”.

“We ask that as a part of this assessment, you take into account the potential nationwide safety advantages of inserting an export management on Nvidia’s H20 and chips of comparable sophistication,” they wrote in a letter dated Wednesday (Jan 29) and addressed to Nationwide Safety Advisor Michael Waltz.

Within the letter, launched on Thursday, they alleged {that a} refined AI mannequin not too long ago launched by DeepSeek made “intensive use” of Nvidia’s H20 chip, which is at the moment outdoors the scope of US export controls.

The letter is an indication of rising concern in Washington about China’s fast advances in AI after DeepSeek mentioned its free AI assistant launched final week makes use of much less knowledge at a fraction of the price of incumbent gamers’ fashions, presumably marking a turning level within the stage of funding wanted for AI.
