The New York Mets have been in a position to get off to a very good begin this offseason when Bo Bichette exercised his $42 million choice to stick with the membership for the 2027 season.
After a sluggish begin, Bichette proved to be a precious commodity, going 39-for-133 (.293) with runners in scoring place and holding his personal at third base.
New York, nevertheless, wants greater than Bichette’s presence to enhance from 2026, a season wherein they received 73 video games and failed to achieve the postseason for the second consecutive yr. As they head into the GM conferences subsequent week, listed here are the positions the Mets want to repair earlier than Opening Day will get underneath approach towards the Marlins.
Determine on who’s the beginning catcher: It’s onerous to consider the Mets are going into subsequent season believing Francisco Alvarez is No. 1 behind the plate as a result of Luis Torrens had an ideal season with the glove and confirmed enchancment within the batter’s field. Torrens led the membership in defensive runs saved (12) and had a slash line of .277/.351/ .523 with runners in scoring place. To date, Alvarez has been harm inclined and recorded -5 defensive runs saved throughout his profession.
First Base: For starters, the Mets made a mistake letting Pete Alonso stroll and take his energy manufacturing to the Orioles. With Alonso despatched packing, the Mets used eight first basemen with Jared Young getting many of the enjoying time in ’26. Younger performed effectively underneath supervisor Andy Green, however is Younger an on a regular basis participant? In opposition to left-handed pitching Younger had a .228 batting common — granted in restricted at-bats. Defensively, Younger was greater than sufficient, recording a 2 in defensive runs saved. Understand that Jake Bauers is a free agent after serving to the Brewers win a World Collection title, however is he price getting an enormous contract after having one good season? Primarily based on what he did in ‘26, Bauers had a excessive on-base share.
Second Base: Marcus Semien is 36 years outdated and it is going to be attention-grabbing to see how a lot he has left within the tank. Semien supplied nearly nothing on offense and protection this previous season. In truth, Semien hasn’t had a productive season since 2023, when he helped the Rangers win the World Collection title. He might have to compete for a beginning job this coming spring. Possibly a platoon between Semien and Brett Baty might assist the membership. Baty, who performed 184 innings on the place, was slashing .250/.318/.406 with 11 homers towards right-handed pitching in ’26.
Nearer: The Mets noticed Devin Williams and Kodai Senga shut video games, however neither was constant throughout the ninth inning. Whereas Senga liked being the ninth-inning man in the direction of the top of the season, he wish to return to rotation. One has to ask, can Williams deal with enjoying in New York? In his two years within the Huge Apple (one yr every with the Yankees and Mets), Williams has been a bust and has two years left on his contract.
Designated hitter: On paper, Jorge Polanco is the on a regular basis DH. Actually? Yr 1 of that two-year, $40 million contract for Polanco didn’t go effectively. On April 18, Polanco went on the 10-day Injured Checklist due to a proper wrist contusion and left Achilles bursitis. Whereas the wrist issues went away, the Achilles issues didn’t. By late August, Polanco had season-ending surgical procedure on the Achilles. If Polanco is just not prepared for subsequent season, Mark Vientos could possibly be the man. The Mets are nonetheless in search of him to work his magic on the plate like he did in 2024, when he hit a career-high 27 homers.
Veteran starter: They began the season with the hope that Freddy Peralta and Clay Holmes would lead the rotation, however they have been each dealt to the Rays and Cubs, respectively, earlier than the MLB Commerce Deadline. The Mets are nonetheless in search of the 2024 model of Sean Manaea to point out up. It was one other yr of inconsistency on the mound for him. New York at the moment has a younger rotation led by Nolan McLean. Due to the Mets’ status of spending cash, there are going to be experiences about them being concerned within the Tarik Skubal sweepstakes. Apart from Skubal and perhaps Holmes, the free brokers class within the beginning pitching class is under common. The Mets greater than seemingly must make a commerce to accumulate that arm.
