Labor icon Dolores Huerta, who co-founded the United Farm Staff, has died at 96, her household mentioned.

“We’re deeply saddened to announce that our beloved mom, Dolores Huerta, has handed away as we speak on the age of 96,” her household mentioned in a statement on her official Instagram account. “As you may think about, that is an extremely troublesome time for us, and we ask for privateness as we grieve this unbelievable loss to our household. We all know that lots of you all over the world share in our mourning, and we shall be following up on plans to acknowledge and have a good time her unbelievable life and legacy.”

Huerta co-founded the Nationwide Farm Staff Affiliation with fellow activists Cesar Chavez and Gilbert Padilla, which might ultimately turn out to be the United Farm Staff. Their work led to the primary farmworker union contracts in U.S. historical past. In 2012, she obtained the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her many years of advocacy in civil rights and girls’s equality.

This can be a growing story. Please verify again for updates.
