Don Mattingly acknowledged that the 2026 Philadelphia Phillies weren’t really his crew after the membership retained him as full-time supervisor on a two-year contract by way of 2028.
“Final 12 months actually wasn’t my crew,” Mattingly stated, via ESPN and the Related Press. “It was Thomps’ crew. I took over from that time and simply type of simply drove the automotive from there. I feel there are issues that I need to do in another way.”
Mattingly stepped in as interim supervisor on April 28 after the Phillies began 9-19 and fired Rob Thomson. He guided them to a 79-55 report and a wild-card berth earlier than a three-game loss to the Atlanta Braves within the NL Wild Card Sequence. The membership completed 88-74 general.
President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski explored different choices, together with former Pink Sox supervisor Alex Cora, who declined twice, along with former Phillies Chase Utley and Raul Ibanez. Mattingly stated he by no means felt slighted, noting he needed the most effective for the group and had confidence in himself.
Wanting forward, Mattingly plans to make the Phillies much less cautious, prioritizing protection — the place they ranked final in Defensive Runs Saved — together with baserunning and a cleaner, extra versatile offensive method that builds on their robust August.
The crew will not be retaining hitting coach Kevin Lengthy or infield coach Bobby Dickerson, has employed Carlos Mendoza for the infield and third-base function, and is looking for a brand new hitting coach.
With a possible work stoppage looming, Mattingly’s familiarity with the roster affords continuity because the Phillies chase their first World Sequence title since 2008.
