To the editor: When main researchers within the discipline of synthetic intelligence inform us that there’s a 10% likelihood that AI will wipe out human civilization in a decade, that could be a fairly scary proposition (“Amodei, Altman, Musk call for slowing AI model development,” Sept. 12). I do know that a lot of my fellow people take this significantly and are terrified that this will likely occur. Nonetheless, if I had been liable to optimism (I normally am not), I might see the ideas by the heads of those AI corporations that they may cooperate to discover a resolution — perhaps even deliver China into the settlement — as astoundingly hopeful. When have enterprise leaders, whose job is making income, ever risked market share to behave for the good thing about humankind? It’s really wonderful.

My query: Has anybody within the environmental discipline give you a share to point the chance that human-caused local weather change will destroy civilization within the not-so-distant future? How about nuclear weapons? Is there an opportunity that corporations and international locations might cooperate to avoid wasting the way forward for humanity? I might hate to be saved from destruction by AI solely to succumb to environmental collapse or nuclear battle.

Is there an answer? Can people cooperate to avoid wasting civilization? Perhaps ask AI.

    Laurie Jacobs, San Clemente

    ..

To the editor: Anita Chabria hits the nail on the pinnacle (“Will ‘Coxon Day’ save us from AI destruction?,” Sept. 11). AI is unlikely to kill us all in a decade, however is already killing a few of us proper now. It’s not simply AI chatbots encouraging suicide, however knowledge facilities and their attendant air, water and noise air pollution.

It’s unimaginable a young person in North Carolina may be arrested for an alleged position within the San Diego Islamic Middle taking pictures, however when ChatGPT reportedly aids a taking pictures at Florida State College, no human is accountable.

Simply open the door to AI corporations dealing with civil and legal legal responsibility for his or her brokers and algorithms after which watch how shortly they handle to give you efficient safeguards.

    Michael Smallberg, San Diego

    ..

To the editor: This column mentions a number of individuals within the AI enterprise who “earnestly imagine” AI might quickly kill us. Then it mentions the attitude of one other AI professional, Rob Bensinger, who thinks we “overcomplicate regulation.” “Merely management the assets AI corporations want — water, energy, knowledge facilities — and all of a sudden we have now leverage,” the article paraphrases.

Yeah, however we have now many examples already of mere people having the ability to hack into and interrupt the electrical grid, the web and water therapy methods. If people can already try this, why does Bensinger assume AI couldn’t determine that out too? Whether it is that “easy” to achieve controlling leverage over AI, why are so many different professionals sounding alarms and giving up their jobs and their paychecks?

    Jim Arden, Valley Village

    ..

To the editor: Once I learn articles questioning whether or not rogue AI might “kill us all” (“Is there really a 10% chance AI could kill us all?,” Sept. 11) and the president’s assurances that “it’s going to be wonderful” (“‘It’s going to be fine’: Trump rebuffs rising alarm over AI dangers, sparking outcry,” Sept. 11), I’m reminded of a scene within the movie “2001: A House Odyssey.” Astronaut Dave Bowman asks HAL, the pc working his spaceship, to open the pod bay doorways so he can reenter his spaceship and return to Earth. HAL calmly says, “Sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t try this.”

This can be the troubling future some are involved about as AI takes management of fundamental and significant decision-making. I’m definitely not reassured by the president’s feedback, as his “four-to-five-week” war in Iran strikes into its sixth month and the price of dwelling continues to rise.
