ZAGREB: Tens of hundreds of individuals gathered in Zagreb’s central sq. on Saturday (Sep 5) to protest the federal government’s failure to start cleansing up greater than 30,000 tons of waste in central Croatia that environmentalists say is polluting the consuming water within the space.

The protest, one of many largest in Croatia in a number of years, was dubbed “Stroll for Lika”, after the mountainous area the place the waste is saved.

Authorities, final yr, uncovered between 34,000 and 37,000 tons of waste, a lot of it imported from Italy in 2023 and 2024, at a web site close to the city of Gospic in Croatia’s Lika area. The federal government pledged to scrub up the location, however environmental teams say little progress has been made.

Environmentalists say the waste, which they are saying consists of medical and different industrial waste, is contaminating air, soil and water in Lika, a area recognized for its huge areas of unspoiled nature. They accuse the federal government of shifting too slowly to take away it.
