To the editor: Columnist Michael Hiltzik’s detailed rationalization of our present federal deficits is concise and correct (“The U.S. national debt has reached $40 trillion. Should you care?,” Sept. 1). The massive danger for the longer term is that the collected federal deficit won’t have a political answer.

In a democracy, politicians typically are extra excited about getting reelected than discovering options to issues. Any politician who dares to suggest that this deficit drawback would require each increased tax charges and a lower in some advantages would danger his or her reelection.

It’s clear that voters wouldn’t reelect any politician who takes away any advantages. Due to this fact, one shouldn’t count on political options to our deficit drawback.
