To the editor: For enlisted navy personnel, the Stars and Stripes newspaper has been relied upon for many years for its unbiased reporting (“Stars and Stripes publisher quits in clash over Pentagon ‘woke distractions’ campaign,” Aug. 20). Certainly, it has been a morale booster as a result of it instructed the reality even when it didn’t replicate effectively on navy management.
Throughout World Struggle II, Gen. George Patton objected to Stars and Stripes publishing Invoice Mauldin’s cartoons that confirmed the gritty actuality of warfare. Patton’s boss, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, ordered Patton to not intervene. Eisenhower knew that doing so would undermine the dedication of the common soldier to the warfare effort.
Throughout the Vietnam Struggle period, I had the privilege of enhancing two Military-sponsored publications: the Fort Benning Bayonet in Georgia and the KORSCOM Charger in South Korea. The one objects we might publish have been these permitted by the Pentagon. I can attest that the publications have been welcome by Military personnel and their households, however, however, they weren’t thought-about as dependable and neutral because the Stars and Stripes. I hope it continues to supply truthful and accountable reporting and commentary on navy life ceaselessly.
