To the editor: Visitor contributor Aditi Hariharan writes that it’s the UC’s obligation to shut the hole that exists within the preparedness of various scholar populations (“SAT scores are another way UC schools are closing their doors to diversity,” Aug. 12). Whereas redressing that hole is actually an vital purpose, universities will not be able to each remediating under-prepared college students and fulfilling what I imagine to be their true obligation: offering a top quality training to these college students ready to obtain it.

One of the simplest ways to make sure that remediation doesn’t decrease the extent and worth of training at larger ranges is to return to performance-based promotion. A scholar must be remediated for highschool work earlier than they attend highschool and so they must be remediated for school work earlier than they attend faculty.

In 2015, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) acknowledged that “a university diploma is the brand new highschool diploma.” That’s true, however not in fairly the identical method as Sanders supposed it. It’s not a lot that faculty is now a prerequisite for upward mobility as a highschool diploma was for earlier generations. It’s extra that faculty college students right now are looking for to amass competencies that was once taught in highschool. And that could be a disgrace for all college students.
