To the editor: This op-ed will get it proper (“Wildfires will only get worse until the U.S. stops ignoring the climate crisis,” Aug. 2). Canadian wildfire smoke drifting into the U.S. isn’t a fluke; it’s déjà vu. Californians know all too properly orange skies and air so poisonous it turns each day life right into a well being risk. Smoke doesn’t respect borders, and neither does the local weather disaster driving it.
If we would like actual local weather motion, let’s begin by naming the culprits fueling wind-driven megafires and the smoke that accompanies them and poisons our lungs: polluters. Among the many largest are firms that depend on fossil fuels, industrial logging and agriculture, the biomass power sector and now the quickly increasing, power‑hungry AI business. They’re all pumping out huge emissions that make fires extra explosive and smoke seasons extra relentless. And governments that subsidize them, similar to ours, are complicit.
Clinging to the fake repair of “higher forest administration” is magical pondering and distracts from the foundation reason for immediately’s most damaging wildfires: a destabilized local weather. The drivers of this destabilization needs to be those funding local weather restore, wildfire resilience and a fast transition to really low‑carbon programs. Till polluters cease treating the ambiance like a dumping floor, and till voters substitute leaders who maintain defending these polluters, our local weather will maintain deteriorating, and our communities will maintain choking on the implications.
